The Day After the Election
Dear Father,
It is 6:00 am on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. I am exhausted after staying up until 1 am to watch the election night coverage. I woke up at 5 am and learned that President Trump has been re-elected to serve as the 47th President of the United States.
In Daniel 2:21 we read:
He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. Daniel 2:21 (NIV)
In other words, You put people into office and You remove them from office as part of Your master and sovereign plan for the ages. Why did Ronald Reagan become president in 1980 and 1984? It was in Your master plan. Why did George Bush Sr. become president in 1988? It was in Your master plan. Why did Bill Clinton win in 1992 and 1996? It was in Your master plan. Why did George Bush Jr. win in 2000 and 2004? It was in Your master plan. Why did Barrack Obama win in 2008 and 2012? It was in Your master plan. Why did Joe Biden win in 2020? It was in Your master plan. Why did Donald Trump win in 2016 and now in 2024? It was also in Your master plan.
Father, there are many who fervently prayed for President Trump’s victory and they are no doubt thanking You today. Father, there are also those who fervently prayed for President Trump’s defeat. They are confused this morning as to why their prayers weren’t answered. Father, many people will discuss issues such as war, immigration, and the economy in their feeble attempt to explain Your decision in this election. Christians who voted for Trump will no doubt cite the Republican party’s pro-life position, a position that is clearly Biblical (Psalm 139), to explain the outcome of the 2024 Presidential election. Yet, You have also permitted pro-choice candidates to win the presidency in the past.
Father, I believe many believers are searching in the wrong place for the reason why one candidate wins an election and another does not. While You no doubt care about topics like inflation and democracy, I believe Your focus is on something far more important:
The advancement of the Kingdom of God and the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The explanation for this election result is best explained with this statement:
Almighty God has determined that, between 2025-2028, the gospel will be best advanced in America and throughout the world through a Donald Trump presidency.
We can’t begin to scratch the surface to understand the intricate threads You have woven together in the fabric of Your Kingdom that will link the inspired work of churches, ministries, and individual believers with the actions that President Trump will take in office. I pray this morning that You will conduct the affairs of the church and the Trump administration over the next four years to bring thousands upon thousands of men and women into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Father, America is still divided this morning. Half the nation is joyfully celebrating an election victory. The other half is in tearful rage, frightened about what is about to happen to their nation. It is likely that the executive and legislative decisions of Trump and the Republicans in Congress will not heal this divide any more than the decisions of Kamala Harris and the Democrats in Congress would have done if they had won this election. It is my belief that the true war for the soul of America is a spiritual war and there are no politicians on either side who can fix that.
While many believers are celebrating this morning, the truth is that America will not heal until Americans humble themselves, get on their knees, confess their sin, seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ, and then surrender their lives to Him. No politician can make that happen; not even President Trump. There are no executive orders, laws, or court decisions that can change people’s hearts. Only King Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, can do that.
The weapons of revival in America are not political; they are spiritual. Believers need to mature spiritually and turn from worldliness. Believers then need to prove the love of Jesus Christ by ministering with compassion to the needs of the lost and despairing (many of whom voted for the other candidate). Believers need to share their faith with their family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers (many of whom voted for the other candidate). Believers need to share their testimonies with whomever will listen (many of whom voted for the other candidate). Believers need to exemplify the character of Jesus Christ as they live their lives each and every day. It is only then that America will truly heal.
Father, I fear that America has stepped very close to the edge of the cliff of civil war in recent years. There is such hatred in this land for the other half of Americans who are on the opposite political team. It is my prayer this morning that the Holy Spirit will breathe upon this land and bring peace to it. Protect our land from the kinds of evil that can spark that war.
If he hasn’t done so already, please lead President Trump to get on his knees and humbly seek the forgiveness of his sin through Jesus Christ. Fill him with the Holy Spirit so that his words and actions will both honor Jesus Christ and calm the political storm and lead Americans to drop their weapons aimed at the other side. Above all things, Father, create the conditions for the prosperity of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the advancement of the Kingdom of God by the actions the Trump administration and Congress take over the next four years.
I ask this in Jesus name,
Amen
